What is Tithi?

Tithi (திதி) is one of the five core elements of the Hindu Panchangam — the others being Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, and Karana. A Tithi is the lunar day, defined as the time taken for the Moon to gain exactly 12° on the Sun. Since the Moon's speed varies, a Tithi can last between 19 and 26 hours — shorter or longer than a solar day.

There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month, grouped into two Pakshas (fortnights): Shukla Paksha (சுக்ல பட்சம், waxing Moon, New Moon to Full Moon) and Krishna Paksha (கிருஷ்ண பட்சம், waning Moon, Full Moon to New Moon), each containing 15 Tithis. The 15th Tithi of Shukla Paksha is Purnima (Full Moon), and the 15th Tithi of Krishna Paksha is Amavasya (New Moon).

In Tamil tradition, the Tithi at sunrise governs the entire day and determines which rituals, festivals, and auspicious activities are appropriate. Important observances like Ekadashi (fasting), Pournami, Amavasai, and Pradosham are all tied to specific Tithis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Tithi today (20 April 2026)?
Today's (Monday, 20 April 2026) Tithi is Tritiya (திரிதியை) in Shukla Paksha, ending at 7:28 AM (Chennai / IST).
What is a Tithi?
A Tithi (திதி) is a lunar day in the Hindu calendar. It is the time taken for the Moon to move 12° ahead of the Sun. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing (Shukla) phase and 15 in the waning (Krishna) phase. Because Tithis are based on the Moon's motion, they do not align perfectly with solar days — a Tithi can be shorter or longer than 24 hours.
What are Rikta (Ganda) Tithis?
Rikta Tithis (also called Ganda Tithis) are the 4th (Chaturthi), 9th (Navami), and 14th (Chaturdashi) Tithis in both the Shukla and Krishna Paksha. The word Rikta means "empty" or "inauspicious". Starting new ventures, signing contracts, or conducting auspicious ceremonies is traditionally avoided on these Tithis. However, worship of Ganesha on Chaturthi, Devi on Navami, and Shiva on Chaturdashi is especially beneficial.
What is Paksha in Tithi?
Paksha (பட்சம்) refers to the lunar fortnight. Shukla Paksha (சுக்ல பட்சம்) is the waxing phase — from New Moon to Full Moon. Krishna Paksha (கிருஷ்ண பட்சம்) is the waning phase — from Full Moon to New Moon. Each Paksha has 15 Tithis, and together they form a complete lunar month (Masa).
Which Tithis are good for new ventures?
Auspicious Tithis for new beginnings include Dwitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dashami (10th), Ekadashi (11th), Dwadashi (12th), Trayodashi (13th), and Purnima (15th/Full Moon). Rikta Tithis — Chaturthi (4th), Navami (9th), and Chaturdashi (14th) — should be avoided for starting new activities.
