🙏 Ekadashi Fasting Rules — ஏகாதசி விரத விதிகள்

Ekadashi is the 11th day of the lunar fortnight, sacred to Lord Vishnu. Fasting on Ekadashi is believed to cleanse sins, purify the mind, and attract divine blessings. There are 24 Ekadashis in a year, each with a specific name and significance.

Ekadashi (ஏகாதசி) occurs twice every month — on the 11th day of both Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). This means there are approximately 24 Ekadashis in a year (25 in some years that have an extra month — Adhika Masa).

Ekadashi is considered the most important fasting day for Vaishnava devotees — those who worship Lord Vishnu or Krishna. The Ekadashi fast involves avoiding rice and grains, and many devout Vaishnavas observe a complete fast (nirjala — without even water). Fruits, milk, and non-grain foods are permitted for those who cannot do a complete fast.

Each Ekadashi has a specific name. Famous ones include Vaikunta Ekadashi (Margazhi month, December), Nirjala Ekadashi (Jyeshtha month, June), and Indira Ekadashi (Ashwin month, October). Reading or listening to Vishnu Sahasranama, the thousand names of Lord Vishnu, is especially meritorious on Ekadashi.

What to do on Ekadashi:

  • Fasting (no rice/grains)
  • Vishnu Puja
  • Vishnu Sahasranama reading
  • Temple visit
  • Meditation
  • Charity

Frequently Asked Questions

Is today (20 April 2026) Ekadashi?
No, today (Monday, 20 April 2026) is not Ekadashi. Today's Tithi is Tritiya (Shukla Paksha). The next Ekadashi is on 27 April 2026.
What is Ekadashi?
Ekadashi (ஏகாதசி) is the 11th lunar day (Tithi) in both the Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (waning fortnight) of the Hindu lunar calendar. There are approximately 24 Ekadashis per year. It is the most sacred fasting day for devotees of Lord Vishnu (Perumal).
How do you fast on Ekadashi?
The Ekadashi fast involves avoiding rice, wheat, and all grains. Devout Vaishnavas observe a full fast (Nirjala — without even water). Most devotees eat only fruits, milk, nuts, and non-grain foods. The fast begins the previous evening (Dashami night) and is broken the next morning (Dwadashi) after sunrise, ideally within a prescribed time window called Parana.
What is Vaikunta Ekadashi?
Vaikunta Ekadashi (வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி) is the most important Ekadashi of the year. It falls during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December-January) on the Shukla Ekadashi. On this day, the Swarga Vasal (Gate of Heaven) in Vishnu temples is opened, and devotees walk through it believing they will attain moksha (liberation). It is celebrated grandly at all Vaishnava temples.
What is the significance of fasting on Ekadashi?
According to Hindu scriptures, fasting on Ekadashi cleanses sins accumulated over many lifetimes, purifies the mind, and invites the blessings of Lord Vishnu. The Padma Purana states that the merit of observing one Ekadashi fast equals that of donating gold or performing great sacrifices. It is also believed to help control the senses and promote spiritual progress.
