Ekadashi (ஏகாதசி) occurs twice every month — on the 11th day of both Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). This means there are approximately 24 Ekadashis in a year (25 in some years that have an extra month — Adhika Masa).
Ekadashi is considered the most important fasting day for Vaishnava devotees — those who worship Lord Vishnu or Krishna. The Ekadashi fast involves avoiding rice and grains, and many devout Vaishnavas observe a complete fast (nirjala — without even water).
