Hora (ஓரை) is a one-hour planetary period used in Tamil and Vedic astrology. Each day is divided into 24 hora slots — 12 during the day (sunrise to sunset) and 12 during the night (sunset to sunrise). Each slot is ruled by one of seven planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn.
The sequence of planets follows the Chaldean order: Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon. The first hora of the day is determined by the weekday planet — Sunday begins with Sun hora, Monday with Moon hora, Tuesday with Mars hora, and so on. After the 7th planet, the cycle repeats.
Auspicious horas (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) are ideal for starting new ventures, signing agreements, beginning journeys, or any important work. Inauspicious horas (Sun, Mars, Saturn) are generally avoided for new beginnings, though routine work is unaffected.
The times shown here are calculated for Chennai (IST) based on today's actual sunrise and sunset times. For other cities, times will vary. See Today's full Panchangam for all daily timings.
