🙏 Pradosham Fasting Rules — பிரதோஷ விரத விதிகள்

Pradosham falls on the 13th lunar day (Trayodashi) of both fortnights. Worshipping Lord Shiva during the Pradosha Kalam (twilight period) is believed to destroy all sins and bring liberation. Shani Pradosham (on Saturday) is especially powerful.

Pradosham (பிரதோஷம்) is a bi-monthly auspicious period occurring on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of both the Shukla and Krishna Paksha. There are therefore approximately 24 Pradosham days in a year. The word 'Pradosha' means 'the removal of sins' (Pra = before, Dosha = evil/sin).

The most sacred time of Pradosham is the 1.5-hour window that begins 45 minutes before sunset and extends 45 minutes after — this is called the Pradosha Kalam. Performing Shiva abhishekam, circumambulation of the Shiva Lingam, and chanting Shiva stotras during this twilight period is believed to grant liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death.

Pradosham that falls on a Monday (Soma Pradosham) is considered extra auspicious, as Monday is ruled by Lord Shiva. When Pradosham falls on Saturday (Shani Pradosham), it is believed to neutralise the malefic effects of Saturn. Visiting Shiva temples and performing Abhishekam with milk, water, honey, and bilva leaves is the primary observance.

What to do on Pradosham:

  • Shiva Abhishekam
  • Pradosha Puja at twilight
  • Fasting
  • Bilva leaf offering
  • Shiva temple visit
  • Pradosha Stotram recitation

Frequently Asked Questions

Is today (06 June 2026) Pradosham?
No, today (Saturday, 06 June 2026) is not Pradosham. Today's Tithi is Shashthi (Krishna Paksha). The next Pradosham is on 12 June 2026.
What is Pradosham?
Pradosham (பிரதோஷம்) falls on the 13th lunar day (Trayodashi Tithi) in both the Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (waning fortnight) of the Hindu lunar calendar. There are approximately 24 Pradosham days per year. It is a highly sacred time for worshipping Lord Shiva, and devotees believe that prayers offered during the Pradosha Kalam (twilight period) bestow liberation from sins.
What is Pradosha Kalam and when does it occur?
Pradosha Kalam is the auspicious twilight window on Pradosham day — it begins 45 minutes before sunset and lasts until 45 minutes after sunset (approximately a 1.5-hour window). This is the most sacred time to perform Shiva Abhishekam, circumambulate the Shiva Lingam, and chant Shiva stotras. Visiting a Shiva temple during this period is considered especially meritorious.
What is Shani Pradosham?
Shani Pradosham (சனி பிரதோஷம்) occurs when Pradosham falls on a Saturday (Shani = Saturn). It is considered especially powerful for reducing the malefic effects of Saturn (Shani) in one's horoscope. Performing Navagraha Abhishekam and lighting sesame oil lamps at Shiva temples is particularly recommended on Shani Pradosham.
What is Soma Pradosham?
Soma Pradosham (சோம பிரதோஷம்) occurs when Pradosham falls on a Monday (Soma = Moon). Since Monday is already sacred to Lord Shiva, Soma Pradosham is considered the most auspicious of all Pradoshams. Performing Abhishekam with milk and bilva leaf offerings during the Pradosha Kalam on this day brings immense spiritual merit.
How do you observe a Pradosham fast?
Pradosham fasting begins from sunrise on the Trayodashi day and is broken after performing Shiva puja during the Pradosha Kalam at twilight. Devotees avoid rice and grains during the day. After the evening puja, they may consume fruits, milk, and non-grain foods. The most important practice is visiting a Shiva temple during the Pradosha Kalam and performing or witnessing Abhishekam.
